iOS 14 Preview : What's in Store For Developers and Customers

iOS 14 and iPadOS are official and will land on many iPhones and iPads in the fall. We'll tell you which devices are compatible and look at the update candidates for watchOS 7 and macOS Big Sur.

With iOS 14 and iPad 14, Apple brings many new functions to iPhones and iPads. In addition to home screens, picture-in-picture function, prettied Siri, and many other features for the iPhone and iPad, the question arises: Which devices are the updates coming from? The answer to that is very gratifying. There are no losses to report this year.

Apple first presented iOS 14 at the WWDC 2020 keynote. "IOS 14 redesigns the iconic elements of the iPhone experience, starting with the biggest update we've ever made to the home screen," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering. And he is not entirely wrong: the previous concept was broken up unexpectedly, especially for the home screen.

Here are some of the updates we will be seeing, thanks to the new iOS 14.

  • Widgets: The widgets previously parked on a separate screen can be dragged between the apps on the home screen using iOS 14. This allows users to place the weather widget or the widget of their banking app between the applications.
  • App-Library: With the "App Library," it is possible to see all the apps on the iPhone in a thematically organized overview.
  • Calls: With iOS 14, an invitation-only appears at the top instead of over the entire screen. Also, face-to-face conversations can be reduced to a window so that other apps can also be used.
  • Messages: Like other chat programs, Apple's pre-installed messenger program now allows direct quotes and replies in group chats.
  • Bicycle routes for maps: Apple's map application "Maps" now also allows the planning of bicycle routes.
In addition to the innovations announced for the iPhone, the iPad operating system iPadOS 14 has some exclusive features. You can find an overview here:

  • Side toolbar: The new command bar on the side of many apps makes it even easier to use - and gives the apps the look of a Mac application.
  • Search function: The improved search function helps with app and file search.
  • Handwriting: Handwritten entries can be recognized and converted into text by the program. Geometric drawings can also be straightened digitally.
Apple also improves the "Augmented Reality" functions of the iPad. The new iPadOS 14 runs on devices from the iPad Air 2.

The innovations are mostly identical. Apple has announced public beta versions for July 2020. IOS 14 should run on all orders with which iOS 13 is also compatible.
